Signer identification: Your private key is only accessible to you, often protected by PIN code or biometrics. No one else can create a digital signature in your name without access to this key.

Document integrity: Even the smallest change in the document after signing can be detected during verification. If someone tries to change a comma after signing, the signature becomes invalid.

Non-repudiation: You cannot later claim you didn't sign the document, because only your private key could have created the signature.

Compare this with a handwritten signature that can be forged, or a simple electronic signature that can be disputed. Digital signature provides a completely different security profile.

Certificate Authorities and Trust

Digital signature only works if there's trust in the system. This trust is established through Certificate Authorities (CA), which verify identities and issue digital certificates.

A certificate issuer like Nets (behind MitID) first thoroughly verifies your identity before issuing a certificate binding your identity to your cryptographic keys. This certificate is used every time you sign something digitally.

EU's eIDAS regulation establishes a European system of approved certificate issuers, ensuring trust across national borders. Danish MitID signatures are therefore accepted throughout the EU.
